Working as an artist's model.
I was especially nonplussed by old Mrs. Ramspeck's treatment of me. She always brought pieces of bric-a-brac or flowers to the class and stuck them around my chair. Then she'd concentrate on painting these objects in the most elaborate detail, sketching me carelessly in the foreground just to be polite. The method played ducks and drakes with my anatomical structure. The time Mrs. Ramspeck made my hands much bigger than my head, I ran to Mother and whispered anguished protests of this modernistic technique. She reminded me that Mrs. Ramspeck preferred still lifes, and I mustn't be rude.
